Skeuomorphic software of the iOS 6 era, 2007 to 2013: stitched leather, linen, felt, wood shelves, glossy aqua buttons with a specular highlight, inner shadows, text engraved with a one-pixel white shadow. The app icon is a rounded square with a gloss sheet over its top half.
Touch screens needed affordances for people who had never used one, and texture said "tap me". Every rendered material was a hint about what a control did. iOS 7, in 2013, is where flat design went mainstream, and the research traces Corporate Memphis to the same turn.
A linen ground from low-contrast noise and a fine weave; a leather panel with grain, a dashed stitch line and a highlight-and-shadow pair; a blue rounded-square icon with a dark inner rim and an elliptical white gloss clipped to its top half. The figure is the engine's flat rendering clipped inside the icon. The label is drawn twice, white one pixel low.
