A personal home page around 1996. GeoCities was founded in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet and sorted its pages into neighbourhoods; Yahoo bought it in 1999 for 3.57 billion dollars and deleted some 38 million pages in 2009. Tiled backgrounds, centred tables, hit counters, under-construction GIFs and a marquee.
A 28.8k modem meant tiny GIFs, a 256-colour display meant the 216 web-safe colours, and no CSS meant tables and font tags for everything. Link blue and visited purple were browser defaults nobody changed. The pages were saved by Archive Team and studied in One Terabyte of Kilobyte Age.
A cached hundred-pixel starfield tiles the page through a canvas pattern. The table is a bevelled border with a white header cell and a see-through middle. The figure is rasterised at 108 cells, each channel rounded to the nearest web-safe value, drawn as two-pixel pixels with a one-bit white fringe where the GIF's transparency ended. The counter counts, the marquee scrolls, NEW! blinks.
