The work

The Beer Game: four desks, one shelf.

MIT has run this game since the 1960s to show where the bullwhip comes from. Beer goes from a brewery to a factory, then a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer, and on to the customers. You run one desk for 30 weeks, and bots run the other three. Each week you see your stock and the order that just came in, and you decide how much to order. That's all.

Pick your desk

Orders take 2 weeks to reach your supplier, and beer takes 2 weeks to reach you. Every case in stock costs 0.50 a week, and every case you owe costs 1.00 a week. Bots run the other desks the way most people do. Lowest team cost wins.
